Obituary for Thomas J McCarthy

On January 27, 2023, Thomas J. McCarthy passed on peacefully just 6 days shy of his 95th Birthday. Born in Flushing, NY, on February 2, 1928 to the late Lawrence and late Helen McCarthy. Tom was a devoted brother and uncle to the late Bill and Nephews Scott and Greg McCarthy.

A graduate of Xavier High School - Class of 1945, and Fordham University - Class of 1949. He spent his younger years as an avid baseball and self-taught piano player.
He worked in broadcasting, advertising, public relations, insurance and publishing.
He hosted Play by Play, Hofstra Univ Football & Basketball Nightly Sports Show (1959-1967).
He was Producer & Performer for Warm-Up Time/Sports Extra - Yankee Baseball (1960-1962).
He was affiliated with the Exchange Club, Elks Club, Knights of Columbus, Optimist Club, Republican Club, and served as Exec Director of Nassau Chapter of Multiple Sclerosis.

A brilliant Pianist, Tom performed extensively throughout his life.

Tom married his high school sweetheart, Rosemary, whom he later divorced, and fathered 9 children with her: Bob, Pat, Maureen, Sharon, Julie, Tim, Chris, Keith and Kerry. Most recently his daughter spearheaded “Project Christmas Card” for her father, which yielded over 400 cards from strangers across the country and brought him great joy in his final days.

Following his divorce, he relocated to Florida where he met and married his late wife of 35 years, Yolanda (nee Greco). They returned to her hometown of Donora, PA, and spent their golden years sharing in a love of travel, golf, socializing, music and piano.
Tom cheered on local Pittsburgh teams, but remained a diehard NY Jets and NY Mets fan.
Tom is survived by his 9 children, 19 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and countless nieces and nephews.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Anthony L. Massafra Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Inc., 40 Second Street Extension, Donora, PA 15033 (724) 379-6900 where the family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Monday, February 6, 2023. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 PM in the funeral home.
