Obituary for John D Culyba Sr.

John D  Culyba Sr.
John Dimitri Culyba Sr., 91 of Carroll Township, formerly of Donora, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, August 12, 2018, at Havencrest Nursing Center. John was born in Donora on November 8, 1926, a son to Carpatho-Russian immigrants, Basil and Mary Bakos Culyba.

Mr. Culyba was a devout and lifelong member of St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church in Donora. He sang in many choirs, including the memorable Carpatho-Rusyn Quartet. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre of Operations, where he was an Infantry Sergeant, largely behind Soviet lines. Mr. Culyba was a retired master machinist for U.S. Steel Corp. John will be remembered as a compassionate, intelligent, multi-talented man; and as someone who nurtured much joy to those he touched.

He was preceded in death by his parents Basil and Mary Culyba, siblings: Basil (Pauline) Culyba, Michael (Lillian) Culyba; Andrew Culyba, Mary Culyba, Veronica (Andrew Kovalak), and Anna (Raymond) Pantuso.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, who came from Budapest, Hungary, Emmy (Kurlander) Culyba; 3 children, Shirley Culyba of Greensburg, PA; John D. Culyba, Jr., of Belle Vernon, PA; and and Thomas (Sue) Culyba of Monongahela; one brother: Peter Culyba of Belle Vernon, grandchildren: Jessica (Erich) Bucher, Christina (Josh) Whitmer, Kimberly, Nicholas, and Alexander Culyba; great-grandchildren: Emmy Whitmer and Elora Bucher, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the ANTHONY L. MASSAFRA FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICE, INC., 40 Second St. Donora, PA 15033; (724)-379-6900; where friends and family will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 16, 2018. A Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Friday, August 17, 2018 at 10:00 AM in St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, Donora, PA with Rev. Fr. Stephen Wahal as celebrant.

Interment and full military honors will follow at St. Michael Cemetery, Donora.

Parastas services will be held in the funeral home Thursday evening at 5:00 PM.
