Obituary for Theresa Kotlensky (Amati)

Theresa Kotlensky (Amati)
Theresa Amati Kotlensky, 89, died peacefully on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at her residence in Donora. In her final days, she was comforted by her closest family and loved ones at her side. Theresa is preceded in death by her parents, ten older siblings, husband John, and eldest son, Timmy. She is survived by seven children, Bernadette Kozen, Belinda Lehman, Mark (Jeanne) Kotlensky, Gloria Keller, Tom (Tina) Kotlensky, Mary (Mike)Boyd, and JoAnne (Michael) Nagy); two sister-in-laws, Lil Amati and Clem Amati; 17 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, and nephews.

Born in a farmhouse near Monongahela on July 16, 1928 to Louis and Theresa (née Dezardo) Amati, Theresa was the youngest of 11 children. She spent her childhood in Donora and attended Donora Senior High School, a member of the Class of 1947. She remained at home during the 1948 Donora Smog to care for family. On June 6, 1951, Theresa married her husband John at St. Charles Catholic Church and shortly after traveled with him to Ft. Belvoir, VA while he trained for service with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Their first child, Bernadette, was born in 1953 and over the next 65 years Theresa and John would raise a family of eight children and be loving grandparents. She was a devout Roman Catholic and found joy in singing in church and community choirs with John. For many years with her husband, she competed on bocce and bowling teams in the Mon Valley. After John retired in 1991, the couple frequently visited with their children in different states and closer to home.

Theresa will be fondly remembered for making people laugh with her spontaneous nature and bursting into song with no notice. She lived by the words her talented son Tom carved into a wooden sign that has long been in her home: Live Well, Laugh Often, Love Much.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Anthony L. Massafra Funeral Home and Cremation Service Inc., 40 Second Street extension, Donora, PA 15033 (724) 379-6900 where the family will receive friends Friday, June 29, 2018 from 5 pm to 8 pm. Prayers will be recited in the funeral home on Saturday June 30, 2018 at 9:30 AM followed by a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Valley Church with Rev. Fr. Joseph Oppong as celebrant.
Interment will follow in St. Dominic Cemetery.

Those wishing to make donations in Theresa’s memory are asked to do so at the funeral home.
