Obituary for Sr. Gemma Angelo
Sister Gemma Angelo, O.Carm., of the Carmel of the Sacred Heart, Hudson, was called home to God on Saturday, February 21, 2015, after a lengthy illness.
She was born Gilda Patricia Angelo, the daughter of Stephen and Felicetta (Abruzzi) Angelo, in Donora, PA March 17, 1929. She graduated from Donora High School, Minneapolis Institute of Medical Technology, and Duquesne University. She was employed as a lab technician and was in charge of the blood bank at the Charleroi-Monessen Hospital.
On November 30, 1955 she entered the Carmelite Monastery in Allentown, PA, and received the name Sister Mary Gemma of the Passion. Sister Gemma professed her temporary vows on July 21, 1957 and her solemn vows on August 28, 1960.
In 1963, Bishop Hammes of Superior, WI invited the sisters at Allentown to begin a new monastery in the Superior Diocese, and Sister Gemma was chosen as the first prioress. On August 19, 1963 she and four other sisters arrived in Hudson, where they were warmly welcomed. She was called upon to represent her community at several national and international meetings of Carmelite Nuns.
Sister Gemma enjoyed gardening, knitting, reading and playing with the series of collies and cats who were a part of the Carmelite Community; but most of all she loved to share her spirit of prayerfulness through personal contacts with all who expressed an interest in seeking a deeper spirituality.
Sister Gemma was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Frank (Jenny), Pat (Millie) and Joseph (Beulah Mae) Angelo, sisters Mary (Frank) Giuliani and Betty (Eugene) Lazzari, and seven siblings who died in infancy. She is survived by nieces and nephews and the Sisters at the Carmelite Monastery.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Donora with Rev. Fr. Pierre M. Falkenhan as celebrant.
Memorials are preferred to the Carmelite Sisters, who also wish to extend their gratitude to all of Sister Gemma’s many caregivers throughout the recent years, for all the love they have shown.
